Being my very first blog, I will say a little more of my introduction to the industry. Back in the summer of 1990 I met Jolyon Lomax who had been a Permutit water softener agent for 18 months. He had grown his business to the extent that he needed another pair of hands.
I was self employed doing a little building work to help pay the mortgage whilst I learnt the about the water treatment industry.
One of my early memories, Jolyon asked me to visit a property to take a look at a water softener that was not working. (At this stage I had been made familiar with Permutit water softeners, only.) The water softener had an Autotrol valve fitted to it, I had seen a picture of one never having seen one in the flesh. Well what to do? There was something obviously wrong. It had a high water level in the salt box. It was an old unit, having had many years of service, dirty, dusty and rather sad looking. Well its fault was not going to beat me, so I thought. I disconnected it and took it back to the workshop, plumbed it back in, switched it on then discovered how it actually should work. Unfortunately, it was not going to work properly again being too old, worn out and tired.
I was apprehensive when I reported the sad information, to its owner, that it was defunct. Much to my surprise they wanted to buy a new one. I installed a brand new water softener which went on to provide them with wonderful soft water for many more years. They said that they would never be without soft water.
I did not have a water softener myself, so I bought a secondhand one and fitted it. I immediately understood why people never wanted to be without soft water once they have experienced it.
I then knew that this was the industry that I wanted to work in for the rest of my working days!
